Decide whether you need transfer or camera control

Copying image files is different from remotely controlling the camera. For simple transfer, an SD-card reader is often the least complicated method. Tethered shooting or remote control depends on compatible Canon software, camera settings and operating-system support.

Define the goal before installing drivers or utilities. If you only need the photos, adding extra software can create more variables than it solves.

Protect the memory card during transfer

Do not remove the card while the camera is writing to it. After using a computer card reader, eject the card through the operating system before physically removing it.

Copy first and verify second. Open several transferred images at full size and compare file counts before formatting the card in the camera.

Troubleshoot recognition systematically

Try a direct USB port, a known data cable and another computer if available. This separates camera problems from cable, hub and operating-system problems.

If the camera is visible to the operating system but not to one application, focus on that application. If the hardware is not detected anywhere, cable, port, camera USB settings or hardware deserve attention.
